Sandstorm Kenya was established in Nairobi to make luxury tents for East Africa's leading safari camps. Inspired by Kenya's breathtaking beauty and resilient wildlife we went on to combine the same traditional skills and materials to create a range of safari-grade travel bags and accessories offering contemporary interpretations of timeless styles. As our reputation has grown both in Kenya and overseas so has our range of products. The finest materials We use the finest East African materials: Kenyan cowhides are individually selected and are tanned using a pull-up technique which means that they actually improve with age; camel hides come from sustainable farmed sources in Kenya's Northern Frontier District; the 18oz water-resistant safari-grade canvas is made from 100% cotton that is grown, milled and manufactured in Tanzania; and the soft cotton drill lining is all Kenyan. The only notable exception is the striking Scottish Estate Tweed, which is made by Johnstons in Scotland. A culture of craft The outer of each bag is cut from a single piece of material to ensure continuity and quality, and each is then assembled by hand to guarantee a lifetime of faithful use. At Sandstorm there is no production line: the craftsmen and women are predominantly Luo tribespeople from the shores of Lake Victoria, where they built their reputation for detailed stitching and finishing while working on fishing nets or weaving, and it is this skill that makes each piece unique. In fact, at a time when the great majority of travel goods are mass-produced, we are proud to be a Kenyan business that is supporting local East African communities through an unwavering commitment to making products of the highest quality by hand: the authentic African safari-grade.
